O'Neill City Council President Scott Menish signs Proclamation dedicating May 12 - 16, 2014 as "National Police Week"
In 1961 Congress asked the President to designate May 15 to honor peace officers. John F. Kennedy signed the bill into law on October 1, 1962. May 15 of each year is now "Peace Officers Memorial Day" and the week in which it falls is "Police Week." This week is a time to pay tribute to the local, state, and federal law enforcement officers who serve and protect us with courage and dedication. Public Law 103-322, directs that the flag of the United States be flown at half-staff on May 15.
To date in 2014, there have been 41 line of duty deaths and 7 K-9 line of duty deaths. Each day we prepare our uniforms and place our badges and remind ourselves to be vigilant as we step
out of our homes and radio on duty. We never know when it may be our last traffic stop, our last code response, or last call for service. We do this job to ensure the safety of our communities and strive to uphold the state and local laws through honor and integrity.

Hundreds Honor Boone County Sheriff
January 9, 2014
More than 80 law enforcement members gathered in Albion on Wednesday to salute Sheriff Dave Spiegel one last time.
"He was what I would consider the epitome of a law enforcement officer," says Trooper Timothy Stopak, a long-time friend and colleague of Spiegel's. "He was very proud of the uniform, regardless of which one he wore." And Spiegel wore several, most recently as Boone County Sheriff, but before that as a Nebraska State Trooper and SWAT team leader.Fellow officers say Spiegel, who lost a battle with cancer and died on Saturday, was a husband, father, and grandfather. But he was also a friend to many.

The officer spoke with the elf and learned his name is Peps McPepperstick. Peps was sent by Santa to aid the police department this holiday season in promoting safety with the kids and the community. Keep an eye out for Peps in the O'Neill area over the next few weeks. Peps will also be sharing safety tips and videos throughout the holiday season.
