The O’Neill Police Department would like to caution the public regarding various scams and fraudulent activity. Every year, thousands of people from across the nation fall victim to forms of scams or telemarketing fraud. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) encourages you to be skeptical of phone solicitations. Some methods in which you could be contacted are by telephone, mail, e-mail, internet, or broadcast and print advertisements. These callers and literature can be very persuasive and sound authentic, so remember never give personal information such as credit card, checking account or Social Security number information to an unknown caller or solicitor. A good rule of thumb is “if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.” For additional information regarding scams, contact the O’Neill Police Department at 402-336-1313, the Federal Trade Commission at 1-887-FTC-HELP or online at www.ftc.gov, or the Nebraska Attorney General’s Office at 1-800-727-6432, or online at www.ago.ne.gov. The O'Neill Police Department is receiving $4,271.25 in grant funding assistance to purchase one in-car camera system and one mobile radar unit, according to Fred Zwonechek, administrator for the Nebraska Office of Highway Safety. "This highway safety grant funding, for one camera system and for one mobile radar unit, will assist the O'Neill Police Department in obtaining this state-of-the-art equipment," Zwonechek said.
Nebraska once again qualified for additional highway safety alcohol incentive funds. The Nebraska Office of Highway Safety has used this funding primarily to aide local area law enforcement in obtaining in-car cameras and alcohol testing equipment used to assist in the apprehension and conviction of impaired drivers.
"The O'Neill Police Department should be commended for taking advantage of this funding assistance to equip their patrol units with the necessary tools to assure safer streets for the residents and visitors in O'Neill," Zwonechek said. "Utilizing this equipment has demonstrated positive results in reducing traffic crashes, injuries and fatalities," he added.
